6 Popular Holistic Practices and Why They Work

If you’ve ever felt like you needed something different to truly feel better, you’re not alone. More and more people are turning to holistic practices that support both mental and physical well-being. Breathwork, sound baths, reiki, and vagus nerve sessions aren't fringe wellness trends anymore. They're showing up in wellness centers across the country, and now they're here in Central New York.

The Paths to Recovery Holistic Health & Wellness Center has brought these practices together under one roof, where they’re offered alongside licensed mental health therapy. We asked the Paths to Recovery team why these treatments are so popular and how they work. Here’s what they shared.

Infrared Sauna

Infrared Sauna

Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas warm the body directly using light panels. The infrared light waves directly warm the body, whereas traditional saunas warm the air. This can support muscle recovery, relaxation, stress reduction, circulation, and detoxification through sweat. Many of our clients simply enjoy the quiet moment to unplug and reset.

Breathwork

Breathwork

Breathwork classes teach breathing techniques that help regulate the nervous system. These techniques stimulate the "rest and digest" system and counteract your body’s "fight-or-flight" system. When done effectively, breathing techniques can lower your cortisol (stress hormone) levels, reduce blood pressure, improve heart rate variability, and increase oxygen flow to the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity and reduced anxiety. Our guided sessions are accessible for everyone, even for beginners.

Reiki & Energy Work

Reiki & Energy Work

Reiki is a gentle practice intended to support relaxation and balance. Practitioners believe in a concept called “universal life force energy,” an invisible force that surrounds living beings. For example, it could be the force that makes you snap awake in the middle of the night when your child is silent in the next room, but some instinct tells you to check on them. Reiki is about channeling and using that energy for healing. The practitioner uses light touch or hands just above the body while the client rests comfortably toencourage energy movement. The idea is that energy gets “stuck,” leading to pain and illness, and the movement of energy creates a healthier environment within your body and mind. While research hasn't proven the existence of life force energy, clients report feeling deep relaxation, emotional shifts, and a sense of calm.

Yoga

Yoga

Kundalini yoga focuses on gentle movement, mindfulness, and nervous system support rather than performance or intensity. Classes are designed to help participants release tension, improve mobility, connect with breath and body, and slow down in a supportive environment.

Sound Baths

Sound Baths

Sound baths use calming tones and vibrations from instruments such as crystal bowls and chimes to create a deeply relaxing experience. Research shows that certain tones and rhythms can calm your nervous system, giving participants the feeling of a physical and mental “reset.” Participating is easy: simply lie down and rest as the sounds help quiet the mind.

Vagus Nerve Sessions

Vagus Nerve Sessions

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body, running from the brainstem through the heart, lungs, and digestive system. It helps regulate your nervous system, essentially acting as the body's built-in calming switch. When it's working well, you feel grounded and able to recover from stress. When it's not, anxiety, tension, and overwhelm can be harder to shake. Vagus nerve sessions gently stimulate and support this system, helping bring the body back to a calmer, more regulated state. Sessions may include breathwork, gentle movement, and nervous system education. Many people leave feeling more settled and more resilient over time.
